Free Information Sessions for Parents/Guardians

The OCDSB Speaker Series offers free presentations to the community and seeks to provide parents and educators with access to leading ideas in education that will allow us to work collaboratively to better support student learning.

The series is sponsored by the District's Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) and supported through grant funding from the Ministry of Education.

Understanding Mental Health and Addiction in Youth – Coping and Resilience

Wonder what stresses youth out? Want to learn more about how to talk to your child if they are experiencing stress? Join us for a conversation about youth mental health, what you can do to connect with your child and strategies to help them cope.

Speakers: Mary Alexandrou - Program Coordinator for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario’s (CHEO) youth mental health program called YouthNet.

Natalie Markoff – Director of Communication & Partnerships for PLEO – Parents’ Lifelines of Eastern Ontario.

Equity in Action

Ontario’s Education Equity Action Plan is the province’s roadmap to identifying and eliminating discriminatory practices, systemic barriers and bias from schools and classrooms to support the potential for all students to succeed. 

Join us as our guest speaker, Chris D’souza, walks you through how to deconstruct personal bias using children’s stories and song. Learn what more you can do to support your child’s achievement and well-being and celebrate our unique differences!

Self-regulation for Children and Parents

Dr. Hopkins will introduce you to Self-Regulation, a powerful method for understanding and responding to your children’s stress, energy and tension.

Join us to learn more about:
• The impact of excessive stress on children and adults
• The importance of relationships for good parenting
• The difference between stress behaviour and misbehaviour
• How parents can use Self-Regulation strategies to understand and respond to
children’s stress
• How Self-Regulation strategies can help parents enjoy their children and become the
parents they would like to be

Speaker: Dr. Susan Hopkins — A passionate advocate for children, families and communities. She leads Dr. Stuart Shanker’s organization, The MEHRIT Centre. She brings her skills to Stuart’s self-regulation research centre as the lead researcher for the practice of Self-Regulation.
