Lisgar CI Flute Ensemble creates a winning virtual performance

When they couldn’t perform together at the Kiwanis Music Festival this spring, the Lisgar Collegiate Institute Flute Ensemble kept the music going – virtually.

The Ensemble had been preparing to perform at the Festival, but when the pandemic shut down large in-person gatherings, the festival changed to an online event. The students and their director, Lisgar CI teacher Lani Sommers, came up with a creative solution. Each flautist recorded their part as a separate track, and a student pieced the tracks together into a beautiful ‘physically distanced’ performance.

The video struck a chord with the judges, and the Ensemble was awarded the Ottawa Flute Association Trophy, the Ottawa Flute Association Scholarship ($500), and the Ronald Duck Memorial Scholarship ($1000).

“One of the main things getting people through these uncertain times is music and the arts,” said Lani. “I am pleased that my students continue to make music together, even though they are apart. I look forward to the moment when we can make music in person together!”
