Free Information Sessions for Parents/Guardians

The OCDSB Speaker Series offers free presentations to the community and seeks to provide parents and educators with access to leading ideas in education that will allow us to work collaboratively to better support student learning.

The series is sponsored by the District's Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) and supported through grant funding from the Ministry of Education.

SPEAKER SERIES — Winter/Spring 2018

Mental Health and Addiction – Coping and Resilience
March 1, 2018 | 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Sir Robert Borden High School – 131 Greenbank Road

Understanding mental health and addiction in youth. This presentation will walk the audience through what stresses youth out, how to talk to youth experiencing stress and finally how to improve help-seeking behaviors for both the parent and the child. It is important to know that language, communication and acceptance is key in creating a healthy dialogue around mental health.

Speakers: Mary Alexandrou - Program Coordinator for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario’s (CHEO) youth mental health program called YouthNet.

Natalie Markoff – Director of Communication & Partnerships for PLEO – Parents’ Lifelines of Eastern Ontario.

Parents/Guardians’ role in the Ministry’s new Equity Action Plan
April 5, 2018 | 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Woodroffe High School – 2410 Georgina Drive

This presentation will explore the fundamental right of students to learn in a bias free environment and will focus on the Ministry's new Equity Action Plan released in September 2017. It will outline the role that the parent/guardian community can play to enhance engagement with their children with the goal of promoting educational achievement and well-being. The workshop will end with a piece on deconstructing personal bias around human identity using children's stories and even a song about body image entitled, "Shout Proud".
