The OCDSB will be extending the deadline for the 2019 Student Survey to January 19, 2020.
The Board decided on the extension to allow more time to complete surveys in class; provide principals, school councils and community partners with an opportunity to highlight the survey; and, in consideration of the busy holiday period, allow parents with more time to finish surveys for their child.
Parents will be sent a reminder email with a link to complete their child’s survey for children from K-6, while students from grades 7-12 will be provided time in class.
The voluntary and confidential survey explores issues of identity, such as race, ethnicity, creed, language, sexual orientation and gender identity, along with wellbeing, engagement and whether students feel safe at school.
The results will be used to enrich other data the District already collects. It will help reveal trends in areas including,
- Achievement Gaps and whether certain groups of students achieve at the same rate;
- Suspension and Expulsion Rates and whether certain groups of students are suspended or expelled at a higher rate;
- Streaming and whether certain groups of students are over or under represented in particular programs or streams (academic versus applied; English with Core French or Elementary French Immersion);
- Sense of Belonging and whether certain groups of students feel more engaged/disengaged at school; and
- Feeling Safe at School and whether certain groups of students feel more or less safe at school.
The surveys take about 20 minutes to finish. Parents and students are encouraged to complete the surveys and help the OCDSB better understand the needs of all students.
