School Year Calendar 2020-2021 Survey

With the close of 2019, the OCDSB is busy preparing for our 2020-2021 school year. And we need your help. The OCDSB is inviting parents and students to complete a short survey about the next school year calendar.

Topics include:

  • When should the Winter Break take place?
  • Should we add two Board holidays?

Please note, as Labour Day falls later than usual on September 7th, 2020, the start of the 2020-2021 school year will begin the week before, on Monday, August 31st, 2020.

The survey will remain open until January 26th, 2020. FAQs
Q: Why is the OCDSB looking at a 2020-2021 school year starting before Labour Day?  A: The Ministry of Education (MOE) requires a specific number of school days to take place prior to June 30. The late placement of Labour Day on September 7th creates a challenge as there would not be enough school days prior to June 30 to meet the MOE requirement for the length of the school year if the school year started after Labour Day.
Q: Has the OCDSB started school prior to Labour Day in the recent past?  A: Yes. The OCDSB 2009-2010 school year calendar had Labour Day on September 7th and the first day of school on Monday, August 31.
Q: How often does this occur? Are there any other upcoming school years where there may be a start prior to Labour Day?  A: In the next 15 school years, a September 7 Labour day will only occur one more time during the 2026-2027 school year.
Q: When will we know the placement of PA Days?  A: Once the survey closes and the feedback is reviewed, the placement of PA Days will be examined.  These could include PA Days on the first day of the school year, the end of the school, and throughout the year. There are 7 PA Days at elementary and secondary.
Q: When will we know the full calendar dates? When is it approved and communicated to families?  A: The School Year Calendar goes to Board and also must be submitted to the Ministry of Education for approval.  Once approval is received, the School Year Calendar will be shared with all families. This takes place early spring.
Q: Will you be consulting other school boards? A: Yes. We continue to collaborate with our co-terminous board in the process towards finalizing our school year calendar. We also remain mindful of the approach being considered by other school boards as this is a reality for Districts across the province.
