School Year 2021-2022

Return to School 2021-22

We’re ready to welcome students back to school to learn, grow and discover. As we get closer to the start of the new school year in September, we will share more information with families about our health and safety procedures.

Return to in-person school planning:

Note: These plans may be updated based on guidance from the Ontario government and depending on the local COVID-19 situation.

Elementary

For elementary schools, the plans look very similar to what was in place in the 2020-21 school year, with resumption of activities in accordance with public health directives.

  • All elementary programs will be offered in person
  • COVID-19 safety procedures in place — distancing, masks, hand washing, protective equipment for staff
  • Cohorting of students and emphasis on smaller class sizes where possible,
  • Staff rotate to classes to reduce student movements
  • Specialized Program Classes will be offered
  • Extended Day Programs available

Secondary

We are planning for secondary schools to return to the semester system for the 2021-22 school year with 300 minutes of direct in-person instruction daily with a lunch break. Based on provincial direction, there will be two in-person classes a day of 150 minutes each. Classes will rotate week over week throughout the first semester, i.e. classes A and B one week with classes C and D the following, then repeat.

Colonel By and Merivale will have the same instructional days as semestered schools but will be organized on a year long model, with classes rotating on a week over week basis on a four week cycle instead of the two week cycle in semestered schools.

The Ontario government has made it clear that secondary schools may only organize at this time using a two class a day model. Should that direction change and allow a return to four classes daily, these models allow that to happen more quickly than quad or octomestering.
