Program for English Language Learners

Program duration: 

  1. Reach Ahead Credit (110 hours): June 30 - August 6, 2021 
  2. Academic Upgrading (55 hours): June 30 - July 23, 2021 

A variety of virtual opportunities are available for OCDSB students who are currently enrolled in English as a Second Language classes or English Literacy Development classes.

Students will participate in both synchronous and asynchronous learning throughout the school day.  Students will need access to a device and reliable internet throughout the day. Students who require a device will need to make arrangements with their home school.

Students may only enroll in one Summer School credit course of any kind (i.e., one Virtual Reach Ahead course or one eLearning course). 

A. Reach Ahead Program (110 hours)
June 30 - August 6, 2021 (no classes on July 1 and August 2, 2021)

IMPORTANT: Students are required to attend the full summer school session (110 hours) to meet curriculum expectations outlined by the Ministry of Education. Attendance is mandatory in synchronous and asynchronous learning in order to successfully complete the program and earn the credit. Vacations and holidays should not be taken for the duration of the course.

Students are required to attend the full summer school session (55 hours) to meet curriculum expectations outlined by the Ministry of Education. Attendance is mandatory in synchronous and asynchronous learning in order to successfully complete the program and earn the credit. Vacations and holidays should not be taken during the duration of the course.

Eligibility:

  • Must be currently registered in an OCDSB secondary school
  • Currently enrolled in English as a Second Language classes or English Literacy Development classes
  • Currently enrolled Grade 8 students may register for GLS10 (please see requirements above)

Fees:

Student fees are required for:

  • International students (must be residing in Ontario in order to participate in this program)
  • Students residing outside of Ontario at the time of registration.

The fee for a Summer School credit is $500.00 + 3% administration fee payable online by Visa or Mastercard. Payment information will be provided upon receipt of the registration.

Format of instruction:

  • Students will engage in both synchronous and asynchronous learning throughout the school day via Google Meets and Google Classroom.
  • Students will need to login and participate in synchronous and asynchronous learning throughout the scheduled school day.
  • Assessment and evaluation expectations of students include direct engagement by students in all activities culminating in triangulation of skills and abilities.  There will be no summatives or exams during the 2021 Summer School session.
  • As this is a virtual learning opportunity, in order to participate in this program students will need to have access to technology and the internet.  Students who require technology and access to the internet should communicate their needs to their Guidance Counsellor.
