COVID Update - Ontario Announces Emergency Measures

Today, the Government of Ontario released new data showing a significant increase of COVID-19 across the province. Rapidly-spreading variants have the potential to overwhelm our hospitals with more younger adults now becoming infected.

This afternoon, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced new measures to impose a provincewide emergency brake effective Saturday, April 3, 2021, at 12:01 a.m. and the government intends to keep this in place for at least four weeks. The new restrictions include limits on shopping, restaurants, organized public events and social gatherings. All Ontarians are asked to limit trips outside the home to necessities only. You can read the Ontario news release here.

Schools will remain open for in-person learning with safety measures in place. The spring break will continue as planned for the week of April 12.

Child care will also remain open during the emergency brake period.

As noted yesterday, with the high number of Covid cases and increasing staff absences, classes are frequently required to pivot to remote learning. Students are encouraged to regularly take home any personal items necessary to continue their learning from home. This includes items that students on an Individual Education Plan (IEP) require for remote learning. This will help to ensure a smooth transition if and when a transition to remote is required.

The Ministry of Education has indicated there will be additional health and safety measures in place following the break. We will share more details on these as soon as they are available.
