The OCDSB is proud to share that South Carleton’s AmaturRaheem Salam-Alada and the leaders of the Black 365 Student Union at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School were recently awarded the 2022 Black History Ottawa Youth Leadership Award.

  • AmaturRaheem Salam-Alada: For her leadership, community engagement and advocacy, specifically as a Student Trustee working to obtain more culturally responsive guidance counsellors and support for Black and Indigenous students.

  • Black 365 Student Union: For their leadership and advocacy in creating safe spaces and opportunities at their school for African, Caribbean and Black students to share their lived experiences and address systemic racism.

The awards were presented during a virtual ceremony to kick off Black History Month on January 29, 2022. You can watch the full ceremony here: https://youtu.be/IY0aeJb5PhE

We would like to extend our congratulations to both AmaturRaheem and Black 365 for their tremendous leadership through their work organizing events, advocating for change and supporting Black students, not only at their school, but across the OCDSB.
