April is World Autism Awareness Month

April is World Autism Awareness Month. Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder that affects one in 66 children, affecting the way they interact and communicate with those around them. Each child and adult with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, and support needs.

In addition to World Autism Awareness Month, World Autism Awareness Day is recognized on Saturday, April 2nd.

A number of activities will be taking place in schools to mark World Autism Awareness Month. Schools will be participating in the ‘Raise the Flag’ campaign in collaboration with Autism Ontario, by prominently displaying Autism Ontario’s flag throughout the month. There will also be a number of learning opportunities in schools throughout April.

If your child would like to join an activity from home, download our Butterfly Colouring Page. The butterfly is our school board’s symbol for Autism Awareness and Acceptance, reflecting the diversity of each person with autism and the journey we are all on together. If you share your photos on social media, remember to tag @OCDSB and use the hashtags #WorldAutismAwarenessMonth, #CelebrateTheSpectrum, and #EveryoneBelongs.

In addition, throughout April the OCDSB is hosting webinars for parents and guardians, and webinars for educators on a variety of topics related to Autism.
