Special Air Quality Statement: June 6, 2023

Environment Canada has issued a Special Air Quality Statement for the City of Ottawa with the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) being in the high-risk category.

They have advised young children, elders and those at risk to avoid strenuous outdoor activities. The general population has been advised to reduce or reschedule strenuous activities, especially if they experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation.

Out of an abundance of caution, we are cancelling today’s Junior Region 1 track meet events. We apologize for the inconvenience caused. Staff will be present at the location to direct students back to their school. The National Capital Secondary School Athletic Association (NCSSAA) games scheduled for today have also been rescheduled. We will provide more details about these, and upcoming events, once we have more information.

Schools have been asked to keep students indoors for recess and for any other physical education or extracurricular activities. If your child has lung or breathing issues and you have concerns about them participating in outdoor activities today, please contact your school directly.

We will continue to monitor the situation, consult with Ottawa Public Health and other local health partners, and provide updates as the situation changes throughout the week.
