Safe Schools/Progressive Discipline

The Board believes that it is the right of each student and each staff member to a safe and orderly learning environment, free of concern about personal safety and, therefore, the Board shall:

(a) reduce and try to eliminate the incidence of bullying and violence in the schools;
(b) provide opportunities for students to develop the skills necessary to handle and avert violent and potentially violent situations;
(c) promote the long-term prevention of violence by preparing students to manage their lives and relationships in non-violent ways;
(d) work co-operatively and in shared responsibility with students, parents, school councils, staff, the wider community and the police to foster a safe and inclusive school environment and to fulfill the guiding principles and objectives of the Board;
(e) ensure that all members of the school community are treated with respect and dignity.

A safe and caring learning community is one that takes a holistic approach to learning and academic achievement through the infusion of character education and opportunities for character development, respect for diversity, parent and community partnerships, and citizenship development. The OCDSB also promotes the use of Restorative Practices. The principles of restorative practices include using informal and formal processes that precede wrongdoing, including proactive building of relationships and creating a sense of community within classrooms and school environments to prevent conflict and wrongdoing. Restorative practices focus on relationship building, especially through affective statements and questions as well as using circles in the classroom to engage in activities that create community and also to model pro-social behavior, active listening skills, and to address problems as they arise. Restorative practices are also used to address the harm that has been done through an integrative approach between those that are involved in a situation to discuss the impact of actions and what can be done to make things right. Schools that use restorative practices have shown to reliable reduce misbehavior and bullying, violence among students, and improve the overall climate for learning.
