Background:

In 2018, the Government of Ontario through the Ministry of Education announced the approval of the new Stittsville Secondary School, with a project budget of $48 million. The opening date for the school is currently scheduled for September 2023.

Since this announcement, OCDSB staff worked with the province and City of Ottawa to secure this location and all required permits to get this project moving forward. We also began consultations with the community to determine attendance boundaries, the opening grade structure and other important considerations.

The school will allow for 1,353 classroom spaces for students in grades 7 to 12. It will offer an English with Core French program, an Early French Immersion program, and a Middle French Immersion program for grade 7 and 8 students. It will also offer English and French Immersion programs for grade 9 to 12 students.

In April 2021, the Ontario government provided approval to proceed to award the tender for construction. Right now, the exterior concrete panels are being put in place this month and the building is taking shape. It will then be enclosed by mid-winter 2022 and interior/exterior work will continue through 2022 and into the spring of 2023.

Stittsville (including the Fernbank area) is currently the fastest growing development area in the City of Ottawa. Over the past three years, building permits have been issued for an average of approximately 1,500 new residential units per year for this part of the District. The OCDSB acquired the land for the new school in May 2019. The site is 6.54 hectares in size or just over 16 acres. It is located at the southwest corner of Robert Grant Avenue and Cope Drive, in the western portion of the Fernbank development area.
