Promoting Equity and Inclusion in OCDSB Libraries

The OCDSB has a strong commitment to equity and inclusive education. These principles are embedded in the learning environment and are important drivers in choosing relevant learning resources that speak to our students and help them feel accepted and valued. Additionally, we promote the exploration of multiple perspectives and realities in our classrooms to support the development of critical thinking skills.

As a District, we are committed to enriching library collections that are reflective of students’ lived experiences. Diverse library materials promote engaged learners, improve equity of access and opportunity, and support achievement and well-being for all students. (Equity Action Plan 2017)  When a student recognizes their family and friends  in the books they read - they feel welcomed and appreciated.  They can hear their voice in the written word.

The 2018-2019 Stories of Identity Collection address a variety of themes (i.e. Indigenous Experience, Gender Identity and pronoun use, Newcomer Experience, Anti-Racism, LGBTQ2S+, Poverty) in both English and French.  This collection is available in OCDSB libraries throughout the district. These stories are part of our growing Equity Collection and our commitment to advancing community connections and understanding the diversity of families in our community.
