Supporting Students During Self-Isolation or Closure

The rise in cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa is concerning. Right now, some students are already in 14-day self-isolation while others are at home awaiting test results. While we all must continue to do our part to stop the spread of COVID into schools, more families will experience this in the weeks ahead.

We have received questions about what sorts of supports are available to students in these cases or should we be asked by Ottawa Public Health to close a class or school.

Every year, there are students away, whether for a few days or longer durations of time. Educators have always worked to help these learners and communicated with families to provide key learning and supports for students. This commitment hasn’t changed.

With the uncertainty of COVID-19 in the background, we had to design our Return to School plan with the flexibility to transition from in person to remote learning with very little notice.

Following guidance from the Ministry of Education, the OCDSB has ensured that all educators have Google Classroom websites or Virtual Learning Environments set up for students. These were created prior to the start of the school year and are maintained weekly by educators. Key learning, resources, and tasks are posted to support student learning. Students who are away or who may be isolating have full access to the virtual classroom.

Please note, participation in learning activities are completely voluntary. It is important students and families prioritize their health and well-being first.

In the event of an entire cohort, class or school closure, the learning for all students would move from in person to remote learning with enhanced live online learning requirements, similar to what is currently taking place in our new virtual schools (elementary and secondary).

These days are stressful and it can be very disappointing for students to be required to self-isolate so soon after returning to school. Know we are ready to support you. Please contact your school if you have any questions.
