Government of Ontario Announces Funding for Two New OCDSB Schools

The Government of Ontario has confirmed funding for the building of two new elementary schools in the Fernbank area and south Barrhaven.

With the support of the Ministry of Education, these new schools will help reduce pressure on surrounding area schools as these communities continue to grow.

The new Fernbank Elementary School will be built in the rapidly-developing Fernbank community situated between Kanata and Stittsville. This school will be located at the southwest corner of Cope Drive and Rouncey Road within the Blackstone subdivision.

The JK-6 school will be situated on a 2.84 hectare site and is located adjacent to a municipal park and will have a capacity of 628 elementary students. It will also include a space for child care.

The opening of this school will serve to ease accommodation pressures being experienced at John Young Elementary School and other Kanata-area schools.

The new Half Moon Bay Elementary School will be built in the fast-growing Half Moon Bay community in south Barrhaven. The school will be located at the southwest intersection of Kilbirnie Drive and River Mist Road.

Decisions regarding attendance boundary, program and opening grade structure will be made in consultation with the community. The 2.84 hectares site is located opposite Guinness Park and will have a capacity of 674 elementary students and will include a child care component.

The opening of this school will alleviate accommodation pressures currently experienced at Half Moon Bay Public School.

This announcement comes as part of a wider initiative by the Ontario government to invest over $500 million to build 30 new schools and make permanent additions to 15 existing facilities, supporting over 25,000 student spaces across the province.

With Ministry of Education funding now confirmed, the OCDSB will share further details on next steps with communities as these projects move forward. This funding is an important step forward in our commitment to providing high quality and accessible learning spaces for all students.
