About eLearning

  • eLearning is a District program that is offered asynchronously, meaning students can log in at the times that work best for them.
  • Classes are taught online by an OCDSB teacher or by a teacher in one of our partner Districts in Ontario.
  • Each eLearning class has a set maximum number of students.
  • Students are required to login at least once per week (and preferably more) into the Virtual Learning Environment. Attendance is required in order to remain in the class and to be successful.
  • Students should plan to spend at least the same amount of time eLearning as they would in a face-to-face class.
  • Unlike a traditional correspondence course, eLearning is taught by a teacher who students interact with regularly.
  • Students are required to keep up with their work on a regular basis in order to be successful.

Registration

Please contact your home school guidance counsellor to register for eLearning Day School or Summer School courses

Who to contact

Please contact your home school guidance counsellor to register for eLearning Day School or Summer School courses.

  • Students who are registered in an OCDSB school should meet with their Guidance Counselor in order to discuss their options for eLearning.
  • All other students who are registered with another publicly-funded school board in Ontario will need to contact their guidance counselor in order to discuss their options for eLearning
  • Students who are not registered in an OCDSB school or another publicly-funded school board in Ontario should contact the OCDSB Admissions Department at 613-596-8731 or boundaries@ocdsb.ca.

Remote Learning

  • Remote learning is different from in-person learning but is scheduled in a predictable manner and involves daily learning.
  • Using technology, students learn from home through a combination of live online instruction and posted instruction/learning activities and materials.
  • Remote Learning involves a similar amount of time to what students would usually spend in the classroom learning and doing independent work.
  • Student assessment and evaluation is ongoing and student attendance/participation is tracked. The expectation of students engaging in remote learning is that they are online and present.

Question

Answer

What is an online course?

In the OCDSB, the term "online course" refers to a fully-online credit course.

How will I access my online course?

OCDSB students will log into the Virtual Learning Environment through the Student Portal. Out-of-board students log into their own board's virtual learning environment. The Virtual Learning Environment contains all of your lessons, assignments and evaluations as well as the tools you will use to interact and communicate with your classmates and teacher.

Will I ever meet my teacher or classmates face-to-face?

Most interaction with teachers and students will take place in the Virtual Learning Environment including Activity Feed postings, Discussion postings, assignment submissions and feedback or using email. There may be some kind of synchronous web conferencing or direct phone conversation as part of your class which will be dependent upon your teacher’s course requirements.

What makes online courses different?

  • Your teacher will be more of a facilitator than a lecturer and you can expect to be more actively engaged in your own learning.
  • Unlike remote learning you will not see your teacher instructing a lesson as the lessons are all included in the content of the course.
  • You will be communicating with your teacher and classmates using the Virtual Learning Environment using many tools found inside the full featured learning management system
  • This method of communication allows you to think about your response before you formulate them.
  • You may have the flexibility to schedule time for this course when you are the most productive. You will have to manage your time effectively and remember to login to the course regularly to be marked as present in the course and to be successful in the course.

Check out some tips for success in eLearning

  • Be realistic. You may get to select the hours that you work, but you will have to dedicate time to work. Remember that you are expected to spend the same amount of time on elearning courses as you would be spending on regular classroom (or face-to-face) courses.
  • Set goals and deadlines for yourself, and stick to them. Keep an agenda or calendar to give yourself reminders in advance of assessment/evaluation due date.
  • Organize a study schedule each week and stick to it.
  • Avoid interruptions. Find or create a place where you can focus and work productively.

What are the technical requirements?

  • You will need to have a device with internet access.  While mobile devices work, you may need to have a larger device in order to work on your course materials.
  • In order to check to see if your browser is supported by the Virtual Learning Environment please check the requirements.
What is the difference between eLearning and Remote Learning?
  • eLearning is almost fully asynchronous and can be done on your own time when it fits your schedule.  You will be guided by your teacher but may not meet your teacher synchronously online at any time during the course and therefore do not need to have a consistent class schedule for a student.
  • Remote learning contains more of a synchronous component and you will meet your teacher online in a meeting regularly and therefore are required to have a consistent class schedule.

eLearning Readiness

Students who find success with their studies, whether it be online or face to face, often have particular skills in common. In the OCDSB, the exit outcomes are particular skills and characteristics we want all of our students to have.  In an online course, these include

  • Effective Communicators (eg. You can reach out to your online teacher to describe any problems you encounter or anything that requires clarification)
  • Goal-Oriented (eg. You demonstrate good time management, are self-motivated and are able to follow the timelines of the course with relative independence)
  • Digitally Fluent (eg. you are able to try new tools in the Virtual Learning Environment, and learn new technology as it evolves and changes)

Will I need a text book?

You will not require a text book for your online course. All of your resources will be available online.

Who teaches online courses?

Certified teachers who are employed by the OCDSB deliver our online courses. Currently these teachers are assigned to both online and regular day school classes.

Are online courses harder or easier than regular classroom courses?

This very much depends on you and the course you are taking. The curriculum expectations for online courses are identical to the curriculum expectations for courses delivered in a regular classroom setting.

Studies have shown that both students and teachers tend to spend more time working on courses delivered online when compared to the same course delivered in the traditional classroom setting. If you are not, at this time, comfortable with computers, some of your time will be spent figuring out how to carry out different applications on your computer.

As a general rule, however, plan on devoting at least as many hours to online courses as you would to regular classroom courses.

How often are students required to log in?

You should plan to log in every (school) day. You will need to spend about the same amount of time it would take to attend an in-school course plus the time it would take to complete homework and assignments out of school.

Your teacher is taking attendance. Students who log in every day and complete their work on time are far more likely to be successful in an online course than students who log in less frequently for longer periods of time.

  • blended course: A course which combines eLearning with face-to-face classroom instruction.
  • Brightspace: The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) currently in use in the OCDSB. This is the software that students will use to access online courses.
  • eLearning: The use of a rich set of online learning opportunities to enhance and enrich achievement for learners of all abilities, and is delivered in a variety of educational environments. Examples of eLearning may include the use of a VLE, use of web conferencing tools, using a discussion board, the use of blended courses, fully online credit courses, etc.
  • online course: Within the OCDSB, online courses refers to fully online credit courses developed by either the Ministry of Education or a school board and offered through the OCDSB via our VLE under the supervision of the Principal of Innovation, Program & Adolescent Learning
  • online learning: Using the Internet to learn. Examples of online learning include fully online credit courses, blended courses, and learning objects.
