Final Evaluation Days and Exam Days for Secondary Students

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is committed to creating conditions that lead to an improvement in learning for all students.

All secondary students complete a final evaluation as part of the consolidation of their learning in each course. The final evaluation may occur just before or during the Final Evaluation Days/Exam Days.

The final evaluation for grade 9 and 10 students may include (but are not limited to) portfolio reviews, exit interviews, performance tasks, lab activities, and collaborative tasks. However, grade 9 and 10 students will not have traditional exams. For grade 11 and 12 students, the final evaluation may consist of an exam, test, portfolio review, exit interview,  performance task, lab activity, collaborative task, project, essay and more.

On the last two instructional days of the school year, no new assignments or tasks will be introduced, allowing students to work on review, remediation, and conferencing with their teacher to determine what areas of growth to share their learning during the Final Evaluation Days/Exam Days. Regular attendance expectations and classroom schedules will be in place on these days.

Important dates for semestered schools:
Last two instructional days:
June 17th and 18th
Final Evaluation Days/Exam Days [Five days.]: June 19, 20, 21, 24, and 25

Important dates for Full Year Schools:
Last two instructional days:
June 10th and 11th
Final Evaluation Days/Exam Days [Ten days.]: June 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 24, and 25

Students can make the most of their final instructional days and Final Evaluation Days/Exam Days by ensuring they are attending and by communicating with their teachers for guidance and to share ideas of how they can demonstrate their learning. We recognize that some students may require accommodations as families participate in different days of significance between June 17th and June 25th.  Parents/caregivers are asked to contact the school to discuss making accommodations for these important days.

As with past practice, it is important for schools to make accommodations to support students in observing these days of significance. Schools do not require proof of identity to make these accommodations.

Schools will be communicating with parents/caregivers regarding the plans for the Final Evaluation Days/Exam Days through the usual communication channels.

Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to talk with students about their progress and achievement, and their commitments during the Final Evaluation Days/Exam Days. Parents/Caregivers may always reach out to the student’s teacher for clarification.

All Specialized Program Classes that do not offer a credit-bearing pathway in secondary schools will continue to operate as regular instructional days. These classes will follow the school timetable and activities that normally take place on the last two instructional days, and Final Evaluation Days/Exam Days.
