SchoolMessenger App

Keeping you connected with your child’s school is important. Our job is to make it easy, accurate and reliable to connect with you. The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) has contracted with West Corporation, provider of SchoolMessenger, formerly known as SchoolConnects or Synervoice for parental outreach, emergency broadcasts, student attendance alerts and other communications.

SchoolMessenger is designed to automatically notify parents for reasons that affect the safety and academic performance of students. SchoolMessenger will extend OCDSB’s existing community outreach efforts and emergency preparedness procedures, as well as inform parents of upcoming school events such as such as EQAO provincial testing, school council meetings, parent- teacher interviews and more!

As an OCDSB parent, you are already registered for SchoolMessenger. However, you now have options to choose how you want to be notified, either by phone or email or both. You can sign up to receive additional school updates, newsletters and more.

SchoolMessenger will not replace current school communication methods. Principals will still be accessible in-person and will continue to communicate via current methods. The District’s implementation of the SchoolMessenger system is intended to extend its commitment to remain personally connected with parents by offering additional and timely communications.

The use of SchoolMessenger is now active and available for use in all OCDSB schools. There is also a free, easy-to-use SchoolMessenger App available for both iOS and Android based cell phones.  You can receive notifications directly to your cell phone.

Report a Student Absence – SafeArrival

At the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB), ensuring students arrive safely at school each day is our top priority. To enhance our existing absence-check procedure, we are introducing a new, more efficient student absence reporting system called SchoolMessenger SafeArrival.

Pilot School

Bridlewood Community Elementary School will pilot the new SchoolMessenger SafeArrival feature starting Monday, May 13, 2019. Following the pilot there will be a staggered rollout with groups of schools for the 2019-2020 school year.

Easy To Use

The SafeArrival feature will let you use a mobile app, a website, or an interactive toll-free phone line to report an absence in advance. This feature enhances student safety; verifies absences in a timely manner

and; improves notification time with parents and guardians.

How to Report an Absence

In some instances, students may need to be away from school for illness, appointments or other events. Parents/Guardians can now use the new SchoolMessenger SafeArrival system to report daily and extended student absences in one of three ways:

SchoolMessenger App

  1. Use your mobile device to download and install the free SchoolMessenger blue app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, the SchoolMessenger website portal, or from within the OCDSB mobile app.
  2. The first time you use the app, you must select Sign Up to create your account. Please ensure you use the same email address your student’s school has on file. If you do not use that same email address, you will not be able to create an account, or may not be able to see the “Attendance” option. You may have already created an account when we introduced the SchoolMessenger Communicate broadcast system.
  3. Select Attendance, then Report an Absence.

These options are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Future absences can be reported at any time using any one of these methods. For same day absences, if you are trying to report or explain an absence using SchoolMessenger SafeArrival and are told it is past the cut-off time, please phone the school directly. The cut-off time for Bridlewood Community Elementary School is approximately 9:00 a.m..

If your student is marked absent and the absence hasn’t been reported in advance, our new SchoolMessenger SafeArrival system will attempt to reach you by telephone to confirm the absence. If our system is unable to reach the designated contacts, school office staff will follow up.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we implement this new system.
