School Climate Survey

Student School Climate Survey Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

2021-2022 Student Survey

As part of our ongoing efforts to create and maintain safe, inclusive and accepting schools, the OCDSB undertakes a School Climate Survey every two years to gather input from students and parents in each of our schools. In April 2022, the district will be launching the next School Climate Survey in class for students in grades 4-12.

The survey is required by the Ministry of Education as part of the Safe Schools initiative, and provides feedback to each school about the extent to which parents, students and staff feel their school supports learning and positive behaviour, and promotes a safe and inclusive environment.

The School Climate Survey asks students, parents and school staff for their opinion on key areas that research has shown to be important in understanding school climate, and that have an impact on student outcomes – with a focus on safety, well-being, relationships, and sense of belonging.

The survey measures include but are not limited to:

  • Engagement (e.g., sense of belonging and social connectedness, positive relationships with adults, intellectual engagement, school involvement, and support outside of school);
  • Environment (e.g. school environment, learning environment,  school discipline, and diversity and representation).
  • Safety (e.g., bullying, harassment, discrimination, and help-seeking)
  • Well-being (e.g., general well-being, and social and emotional skills)

Some important notes about the survey:

  • The survey is voluntary; students can decide whether they want to complete the survey, and can skip any questions they do not want to answer.
  • The survey is anonymous and confidential.
  • Results of this survey will be reported at the school-level and individual respondents will not be identified.
  • Information will be used by schools to build safer spaces in which everyone is respected and feels that they belong.

Results are available for the most recent administrations of the elementary student survey, secondary student survey, & parent survey

The OCDSB has since created a new school climate survey for students to replace the OurSCHOOL survey, which was administered by The Learning Bar and used since 2012-2013. The new School Climate Survey aligns with District priorities identified in the OCDSB Strategic Plan (2019-2023), the OCDSB Mental Health Strategy (2019-2022), and the OCDSB Indigenous, Equity, and Human Rights Roadmap (2020-2023).
