Celebrating the Official Opening of Wazoson Public School

On May 2nd, Wazoson Public School held its official opening ceremony, where students, staff, and community representatives gathered to celebrate the school community.

The event kicked off with student-guided tours of the school at 989 Kilbirnie Drive. Thanks to an investment of $24.2 million from the Ontario government, construction of the school began in the spring of 2022 and it opened to students and staff in January 2024. From the classrooms to the hallways, students were proud to showcase their learning spaces, many of which sported beautiful artwork and collaborative displays.

An assembly followed, with remarks and reflections from Elder Albert Dumont, Principal Janis St-Germain, Director Pino Buffone, Councillor David Hill, Trustee Donna Blackburn, and School Council Chairs Varsha Chaugai and Jason Glover.

The talented student choir lent their voices to the ceremony, and students showcased a video they’d worked on called “The School We Built,” inspired by the children’s book The House That Jack Built by Diana Mayo.

Later that evening, families were invited to the school to enjoy a student art gallery, with plenty of eye-catching creativity on display.

Wazoson Public School offers dual track English and Early French Immersion programming for students from Kindergarten through to Grade 5. Wazoson means bird’s nest in Algonquin/Anishinaabe. A nest is a safe place for young birds to grow. Just like birds of all kinds have a place in nature, every student has a place in the school.
