Elgin Street Public School Builds Digital Library to Share Reflections on Equity and Inclusion

Students and staff at Elgin Street Public School collaborated to build a digital library of student-created books on equity and diversity.

The school community worked over several months to create the 12 books, with each grade contributing artwork and messages on topics including character education, Indigenous education, equity and diversity. The students’ contributions reflect on the work that we can all do to build an inclusive Culture of Caring across the OCDSB and beyond.

“At our school we love to celebrate our diversity,” says Ingrid Bauer, grade 5/6 teacher.. “Having a collaborative book as an end goal in mind helped open more dialogue on equity and diversity issues among my students. Not only did this project help us become more reflective and critical thinkers of needed change in our society, but it helped my students realize that all our voices need to be heard.”

Here’s what some of the young authors and illustrators had to say about participating in the project:

  • "We learned to never exclude someone" - Kindergarten
  • "Soon I will be friends with everyone in the world!" - Kindergarten
  • “We learned how good it feels to share positive messages." / "Nous nous sentons si bien de partager des messages positifs". - Grade 2
  • "We feel proud that we made something that others will see and appreciate." / "Nous sommes fiers d'avoir créé quelque chose que les autres vont voir et apprécier" - Grade 2
  • "I did some research about what kindness can do to your body and how it can change you and how it releases endorphins when you do something nice for someone." - Grade 5
