Dear OCDSB Families,
Late last week, I had the opportunity to visit Pinecrest Public School. Led by a team of talented staff, it was so inspiring to see the experiential learning taking place with engaged students... baking cookies and playing instruments, for instance, along with authentic tasks related to the core skills of literacy and numeracy. The site truly represents the richness of community and strength of diversity of our District.
I also wish to note that ‘World Autism Awareness Day’ was held on Tuesday of this week… with a theme of “Empowering Autistic Voices”… an opportunity to support individuals with autism in their learning, their pursuits and their passions.
Eid al-Fitr is a joyous celebration that marks the end of Ramadan. We wish a Blessed Eid to all who are celebrating next week.
Reminder - Monday, April 8th: Solar Eclipse - Schools are closed to students
On Monday, April 8, 2024, Ottawa will experience a partial solar eclipse. A reminder that OCDSB schools and OCDSB-operated Extended Day Programs are closed that day to students. We have compiled some resources — Grades K-6, Grades 7-12 — that students can engage with to know more about the solar eclipse. The Ottawa Public Health (OPH) has shared information about the solar eclipse including the health risks, protecting oneself and FAQs that may be helpful.
Coming Next Week: 2024 Valuing Voices - Identity Matters Student Survey
On Thursday, April 11th, parents and caregivers of students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 will receive an email with a link to their child’s 2024 Student Survey. Students in grades 7 to 12 will receive their own survey. Participation is voluntary and what you share is up to you. The information gathered through the student survey will help to address issues including school safety, bullying, mental health, learning, and student achievement. AFFIRM: Parent/Caregiver Information Program on Supporting 2SLGBTQ+ Youth
We will be hosting a virtual, 7-session group program designed to help parents/caregivers build confidence and skills to support their 2SLGBTQ+ child. All who support 2SLGBTQ+ young people are welcome, including adoptive parents, kinship, chosen, and foster families. The program will take place on Tuesdays from April 16 to May 28, 5:00-6:30 p.m. Registration is required and spots are limited. Learn more and submit your expression of interest.
May 4: Open Trails Day at Bill Mason Outdoor Education Centre
Bill Mason Outdoor Education Centre is having its annual Open Trails Day on Saturday, May 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is the only day of the year when this 77-acre classroom is open to the public for everyone to explore!
Spring/Summer Virtual French Programs - Free
The Canadian Parents for French (CPF) is offering Virtual French Programs, free to all families in our school board, ensuring the most equitable opportunity for students to learn and practice their French in an academic and fun environment over the summer. The programs are designed to develop students’ oral proficiency; interest in reading; and build their confidence. Registration opens on April 15th. For more details, visit their website.
Explore French Summer Program 2024 - Let us know you’ve applied
Please use this form to let us know if the student has applied to the Explore French Summer Program. This will allow us to follow up with the student before, during, and after your participation. We will be adding them into a Google Classroom, where they will be provided with the information on challenge requirements, signing up for an interview time and submitting their portfolio.

OCDSB students and alumni have been recognized through awards, scholarships and competitions.
Charif B. from Sir Robert Borden High School was the recipient of a $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship from the University of New Brunswick. Meanwhile, South Carleton High School alumnus Nicholas Durocher, known as TALK, was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Juno Awards. Read more in our Celebrating Success series.
Canterbury High School took home 13 awards at the Ontario Business Educators’ Association (OBEA) conference and awards ceremony this fall. Student journalist Arson M. shared the story.

ACE’s main focus is to assist the Board of Trustees in fulfilling its commitment to provide an equitable and inclusive learning and working environment. Elementary Program Review: Approved by Board by Trustees
On Tuesday, April 2nd, the elementary program review consultation plan received support and will be tabled for approval at the Board meeting on April 25, 2024. The purpose of this review is to look at our elementary programs (Full day kindergarten, English with Core French, Early French Immersion, Middle French Immersion, Alternative, and Ottawa-Carleton Virtual) along with special education and English as a Second Language supports and services in order to determine whether the current program model still serves the needs of our community. Please consult the OCDSB’s Elementary and Secondary calendars for PA Days, holidays, exam dates, and more during the 2023-2024 school year. In addition, schools avoid scheduling activities like evaluations and field trips on certain religious/creed-based days of observance.
