The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board offers Elementary and Secondary International Languages (IL) Programs through Continuing Education. The IL Program is mandated under the Ministry of Education. Communities work in partnership with the school board in order to provide high-quality instruction in non-official languages.

The focus of the Elementary Program is to offer children an opportunity to develop and/or maintain the ability to listen, speak and write a new language or the language of the home or heritage. In so doing the children will benefit by:

  • Enhancing the concept of self and heritage
  • Improving communication with parents/guardians/grandparents/family members
  • Strengthening cognitive development through the knowledge of an additional language
  • Learning and experiencing a new language and culture
  • Building a bridge between the Canadian and heritage cultures.

As per Ministry of Education guidelines, the following documents MUST be brought at the time of registration to the International & Indigenous Languages School sites on Saturday, September 7, 2019:

  • Proof of Address (2 pieces). See "Proof of Address" section on page 2 of the registration form for acceptable documents of proof of address.
  • Proof of Citizenship and Status in Canada. See "Proof of Citizenship and Status in Canada" section on page 2 of the registration form for acceptable documents.
  • Copy of last year day school Report Card - OEN

Fee-paying students: Students whose home address is outside of Ontario or who are on a Student or Visitor Visa must pay a $180.00 fee at the time of registration to attend a language class. Fees can be paid by cash or cheque (made out to the: International Languages OCDSB)

In addition to various weekend language programs, OCDSB offers different International Languages at 8 elementary schools as After School Programs. This is an excellent opportunity for our learners to learn a new language and the culture of that language. Previous exposure to the language is not necessary.
