Grade 6, 7, 8 Summer Programs

Class Times
Full Day:
8:30 am - 3:35 pm 
Morning Class: 8:30 am - 11:45 am
Afternoon Class: 12:20 pm - 3:35 pm

Continuing Education offers academic programs for grade 6, 7, and 8 students that address student needs. To be able to register for the programs listed below, students in grades 6, 7, and 8 must be recommended by their school for these programs. Parents and students are asked to communicate with their teachers if they are interested in attending this program.

Transportation:
Yellow school bus service is available in the morning and afternoon to students attending these programs, and bus passes may be provided to some students. Students attending AM classes may be picked up in the morning but must make their way home at noon. Students attending PM classes must arrive on their own but may be dropped off in the afternoon.

Important:

  • Students are required to attend the full summer school program ( July 3 - July 25).  Vacations and holidays must not be taken for the duration of the program. 
  • Students are expected to be in Canada during the duration of the session.
  • Students may choose to attend for a morning or afternoon or a full day. Morning class: 8:30 am - 11:45 am. Afternoon class: 12:20 pm - 3:35 pm.
  • All programs are offered based on enrollment. Continuing Education may cancel classes due to low enrollment.

Summer School for Grades 6-8 Getting Ready for the Next Grade

Locations: Broadview Public School, Jack Donohue Public School, Steve MacLean Public School, Summerside Public School, and Virtual School. (Programs available dependent on enrollment).


This program is open to any student currently enrolled in grade 6, 7, and 8 in the OCDSB in the 2023-2024 school year and who meets at least one of the criteria listed below:

  • currently achieving below the provincial standard in Language Arts and/or Math
  • currently receiving support as an English Language Learner at Step 1-2 ESL
  • currently receiving support as an English Language Learner at Step 1-4 ELD

What type of learning activities can students expect to take part in?

Students will have opportunities to:

  • connect with an OCDSB teacher to receive full group, small group and/or individualized instruction that focuses on literacy and numeracy gaps.
  • explore a different foundational numeracy topic each week through teacher led activities.
  • receive individual guidance and build foundational literacy skills through teacher led activities
  • participate in hands on/experiential learning (ELD students)

Class size: 10-15 students

 

Summer School Getting Ready for Grade 9

Locations: Broadview Public School, Jack Donohue Public School, Steve MacLean Public School, Summerside Public School, and Virtual School. (Programs available dependent on enrollment).

This program is open to any student currently enrolled in grade 8 in the OCDSB in the 2023-2024 school year and who meets the criteria listed below:

  • currently achieving at the provincial standard in Language Arts and/or Math
  • lacks confidence in academic performance or has learning gaps
  • has been identified by their teacher as a student who would benefit from additional practice and preparation before grade 9

What type of learning activities can students expect to take part in?

Students will have opportunities to:

  • connect with an OCDSB teacher to receive full group and small group instruction that focuses on Language Arts and Math
  • deepen their understanding of key numeracy concepts each week through teacher led activities.
  • get feedback on and further develop their literacy skills, in particular writing skills, each week through teacher led activities.

PLEASE NOTE - this is not a program for students achieving above the provincial standard.
