Celebrating Success: May 2024

OCDSB students and staff have been recognized through awards and prize-winning efforts in competitions. Here are just a few of the success stories we’re celebrating:

2024 Summer Olympics

Nepean High School’s Julie Brousseau qualified for the 200m relay at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris! Julie is no stranger to making waves in the swimming world – we featured her back in 2022, when she swept the Canada Games with 11 medals. Please join us in wishing Julie all the best on her journey to the Olympics!

Ottawa Piano Festival

A dedicated participant in the Ottawa Piano Festival since 2021, Merivale High School student Ethan Q. returned to the festival this year, performing Chopin’s Impromptu No. 2 in F sharp Major. Ethan’s piano performances this year have already earned him two scholarships – the $300 ARCT Scholarship and the $500 Duet: 16 and Under Scholarship. He joined CBC Radio’s All In a Day to share some of his music and talk about what the festival means to him.

MASC Arts Awards

Leah L. from Carleton Heights Public School was one of the winners of the 2024 MASC Arts Awards! These annual awards are a celebration of students in Grades 6 to 8 who are passionate, creative and would benefit from support to explore their artistic development outside the school setting. Leah won a scholarship to attend music classes at Allegro Music School.

Eleanor Newman Award for Outstanding Service

OCDSB Director of Education Pino Buffone received the Eleanor Newman Award for Outstanding Service from the Eastern Ontario Staff Development Network (EOSDN).

In a statement, EOSDN Board Chair, Brent Bovaird, reflected upon the significant commitment that Pino has given to the mission of the Network: “His service to EOSDN has been valued and impactful to the success of the Network and to the professional growth and success of those he has encouraged to actively engage in EOSDN opportunities.”
