A Collaborative Canvas: Sir Robert Borden High School Students Unveil Vibrant Mural
Grade 7-12 students at Sir Robert Borden High School magnified their creativity by creating a striking 20-foot mural to showcase equity, diversity, and inclusion within their school community. The mural was designed to represent the voice of the students, giving them a platform to feel a sense of belonging and bringing them together to make something beautiful.
From the creative planning stages to adding the final brushstrokes, each step of the process was collaborative. Students began by creating their own designs for the mural. They shared these with their peers, exchanging constructive feedback and editing their artwork. Then, they held a school-wide vote to decide on the final mural design. The vote unanimously selected a vibrant, nature-inspired design.
More than 130 students came together to paint the mural, with guidance and support from Visual Arts teacher Mrs. Cain and MASC artist Nicole Belanger and her sister Renee. Students worked in small groups over the span of a week. They expressed how much they loved working with professional artists, collaborating as a team, and getting to use high-quality paints! The project was made possible by the support and funding of the MASC Participate! program.
