The City Through a Modern Lens: Student Photography Exhibition

The Ottawa Archives Gallery recently offered a stunning glimpse into downtown Ottawa through the eyes of Merivale High School students. 22 students in the Photography course and Specialist High Skills Major program collaborated to present "The City Through a Modern Lens," a photography exhibition that combined memories of Ottawa’s past with fresh perspectives on the city today.
The students began by exploring archival photographs of Ottawa, using these historical images as inspiration for their own photoshoot in the heart of the city. Guided by teacher Jaclyn Canas, they researched and discussed how to approach photographing various locations. They aimed to capture a variety of perspectives that highlighted the city’s evolving environment as well as its timeless architecture.
Students, families and community members gathered for the Vernissage on January 28th to celebrate the exhibition. The gallery featured over 30 curated photographs as prints and digital projections, displaying the students’ technical skills and unique perspectives. A TV display showcased the archival photos that inspired the project, providing a glimpse into the past that contrasted with the students' modern interpretations.
This months-long collaboration was made possible by the support of the City of Ottawa Archives and Laura Logan, Exhibitions & Outreach Officer at the Archives. The experience provided a strong foundation for these young photographers, connecting them with Ottawa's past and inspiring their future visions of the city.
