Adaptive Learning Program

About Adaptive Learning

The goal of the Adaptive Learning Program is to help prepare adults with intellectual disabilities for independence, employment or volunteer work in the community by providing learning opportunities, resources and hands-on experiences.

About This Program:

Students with intellectual disabilities on the employment pathway participate in school-based work settings to learn transferable skills, as well as job-specific skills.

Transferable skills are those that will help them in any job, such as:

  • Gaining self-confidence, problem solving and self-management
  • Understanding workplace culture and expectations
  • Working as part of a team and working alone
  • Using strategies for handling conflict and stress
  • Prioritizing and organizing tasks
  • And more

Targeted skills are specific to various workplace environments. Examples include:

  • Retail or customer service: Hands-on experience working in a school-based second hand store, learning safe work habits, working as a team, merchandising, and more. 
  • Food service: Hands-on experience helping to run a school-based coffee shop, learning to read recipes, instructions, how to serve customers, cleaning and handling food, public health regulations, and more. 
  • Office and library: Hands-on experience working in the school resource room, learning skills such as laminating, binding, shredding, and photocopying, organizing, and more. 
  • Plant care and maintenance: Hands-on experience working in a school-based greenhouse, learning skills such as tracking plant care, preparing seedlings, planting, selling, general cleaning and more.
  • And other skills based learning opportunities

Eligibility:

The Adaptive Learning Program is for adult students with intellectual disabilities who are Ontario Residents. The Adaptive Learning Program instructors and staff are able to support students who:

  • Demonstrate a high level of independence
  • Can arrange transportation to school with the support of family/guardian
  • Can self-monitor independently during lunch and break
  • Will be successful in attaining specific goals
  • Have a desire to work or volunteer in the community
  • Are able to understand and follow routines and directions
  • Will adapt to work in a variety of environments
