Stittsville High School - Ready for Opening September 2024

Work is actively underway on the construction of the highly anticipated new high school in Stittsville.  Based on the current construction status and schedule for completion, the building phase of the new school should be completed in late spring 2024.  The new school will be ready to welcome students and staff in September 2024.

The September 2024 opening date is one year later than what was anticipated at the start of construction.  The construction schedule was adversely impacted by a number of factors including supply chain challenges and recent labour disruptions in the construction industry.

For the 2023-2024 school year, attendance boundaries for schools in and around the Stittsville community will remain status quo.  Additional information related to the school opening will continue to be shared with the community to ensure a successful transition and opening for September 2024.

Following the Ministry of Education announcement of capital funding in March 2018, the Stittsville Community will be welcoming a new secondary school (1,353 pupil places) to serve grade 7-12 students in the area. The new school will be located at the southwest corner of Robert Grant Avenue and Cope Drive. The opening date for the school is currently scheduled for September 2023.

New Stittsville SS Project Update

A local study working group was formed in the Fall of 2019 in order to consider possible attendance boundaries, the school's opening grade structure, and also other associated changes.  The working group completed its part of the process, and supported moving forward to the next stage of the study process, public consultation on a proposed plan.

Given the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, a standard format Public Consultation Meeting held in a school setting was not possible. An alternate online public consultation was employed to gather public input on a draft staff recommendation report that was formed from the proposed plan.  Over 50 emails were received and 190 participants (71% parents/guardians; 19% students; 4% staff; and 6% community members) took part in the Thoughtexchange™ process sharing 122 thoughts and assigning 2,619 stars to those thoughts.

New Stittsville Secondary School Study

In March 2018, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board received confirmation of capital funding from the Ministry of Education for the construction of a 1,353 pupil place secondary school to serve grade 7 to 12 students in the Stittsville area.

At its meeting of October 22, 2019, Board approved a timeline and consultation process to determine the program, attendance boundary, and opening grade structure for the new Stittsville secondary school, and make other associated changes.

The school is scheduled to open to students in September 2022 and will be located at the southwest corner of Robert Grant Avenue and Cope Drive, in the western portion of the Fernbank Community.  The school site is just over 16 acres in size.  Site planning and building design work for the new secondary school is now almost complete.  Construction is anticipated to begin in the Spring of 2020.

The approved consultation process will commence in November with the formation of a local working group.  The group will meet several times over the fall and winter prior to a Public Consultation Meeting tentatively scheduled for April 2020.

Your input is important and welcome throughout the consultation process.  Parents/guardians and all other members of the public are invited to attend the Public Consultation Meeting to provide feedback on proposed option(s) that will be presented that evening.

Staff recommendations are anticipated to be brought forward for approval to Committee of the Whole and Board in June 2020.

Additional information regarding the review will be posted over the next few months.  Please keep checking this webpage for further updates and information.
