About the OCDSB Extended Day Program

Registered Early Child Educators and Early Learning Assistants lead this program and offer our students a seamless day of learning at one location. Structured and non-structured activities offer children opportunities to learn through play.

Activities include quiet reading time, gross motor opportunities in the gym and outside, plus open play within the classroom. Your child will be in familiar surroundings with staff and friends they have been with during the day.

The Extended Day Program operates from 7 a.m. to the start of school and from the end of school until 6 p.m. Parents may register their child for the morning, afternoon, or for both. The program runs on all instructional teaching days and is available for select professional activity days.

Registration for Extended Day Programs on non-instructional days and holidays (select days at the Winter Break and March Break) may be available and will be done by separate registration, identifying the chosen locations offered for each break. Typically reduced locations across the district are selected for break periods.

In accordance with the Education Act and regulation, school boards may directly operate before and after school programs or they may enter into an agreement with a Third Party Operator.

If your child is not currently on the waiting list for your chosen school, please be advised that you must add your child to the City of Ottawa Child Care Registry and Waitlist (CCRAW) before we can proceed any further with your registration. Access the Child Care registry at https://onehsn.com/Ottawa or call the City of Ottawa at 311 for assistance.

You will be contacted once we are able to confirm your subsidy placement in the Extended Day Program.

Guiding Principles

School boards are required to comply with the provisions for before and after school programs set out under Part IX.1 of the Education Act, Regulation 221/11 entitled “Extended Day and Third Party Programs,” and by the four foundations of "How Does Learning Happen? Ontario's Pedagogy for the Early Learning".

View of the Child: All students are competent, capable of complex thinking, curious and rich in potential. Environments and experiences allow students to exercise choice and responds to individual abilities and interests.

Positive Interactions: Programs support students in making connections with their peers and staff in structured and unstructured interactions as well as provide opportunities for students to engage in independent activities. All students, including students with differing abilities feel valued, connected to others, and are able to make positive contributions to the group, community and natural world.

Developmentally Responsive:
All students are able to participate fully in ways that are most comfortable for them. Programs support physical and mental health and wellness, and are rooted in an understanding of child development and the broader contexts within which this development is happening (e.g. local, social, cultural, economic).

Safe, Inclusive Spaces: Programs establish and maintain positive, harassment/discrimination free environments for optimal participant growth so that students, each with differing abilities, interests and perspectives feel that their experiences and strength are valued.

Frequently Asked Questions

Applications for the Extended Day Program are accepted on an ongoing basis. Please note that the EDP application process now involves two mandatory steps:

 (i) Click on the Apply to EDP link on the EDP website to submit a new application for each child (including the younger siblings of actively registered EDP children). Once your application has been submitted, it will automatically be added to the EDP waitlist at your child's school.

(ii) Add your child to the City of Ottawa Child Care Registry and Waitlist (CCRAW) for the OCDSB Extended Day Program - name of your child’s schoolIn order to find that program on the CCRAW, please ensure you have selected the correct school board and school in your child’s profile on the CCRAW.

Applications are reviewed by the school's Team Manager, Extended Day Program, on a first come/first served basis, according to the date of submission of application (i) as well as the requested start date. An admission offer will be emailed to the parent/caregiver once there is space in the program. Please note that there will be no start dates given in the month of June annually.

Admission offers for students new to the program in September are emailed to families starting in the spring of the preceding school year, as space and staffing allow. While the school registration and EDP application process can take place concurrently, children must be fully registered at their school before an EDP admission offer can be issued. To help avoid delays, we strongly recommend that the school registration process begin well before the summer months.

The minimum registration requirement for the OCDSB Extended Day Programs is five mornings, five afternoons or five mornings and afternoons per week.

The first and last days of the Extended Day Program align with the first day of school in September and the last day of classes in June, respectively. The elementary school calendar for the following school year is typically approved and posted on the OCDSB website by May; and the EDP calendar for the following school year is posted on the EDP website over the summer months.

Please refer to the EDP calendar for the current school year to see the specific dates when optional full-day care will be offered. No care is offered over the summer months.

Optional full-day care is offered on approved Professional Activity Days throughout the school year; with the exception of two PA Days each year, when the EDP educators are involved in training. PA Day registration details are sent to families when they begin in the program and will be offered onsite at your child’s school based on sufficient enrollment.

Winter and March Break programs may be offered, subject to senior staff approval.  Registration information for these break programs is sent directly to the families of children who are actively attending the program by each registration deadline. The number of sites and spaces are limited for these programs and mixed cohorting is to be expected.

The OCDSB offers care through a combination of district run programs as well as through partnerships with third party providers who meet the legislative requirements set out by the Ministry of Education. For a list of childcare programs offered by the OCDSB and its Third Party Operators please visit the links above. If a third party operates the before/after-school program at your child’s home school, you will need to contact them directly for registration and information.

If you receive a service error when trying to apply or register your child for the EDP program, please ensure you are using a personal computer and are not linked to a government or corporate VPN.  Please also note that the EDP portal is only accessible within Canada.

Fees for the Extended Day Program are processed via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT).  The monthly fee is due on the first day of each month and will be withdrawn from your bank account on the first business day of the month with the exception of September when the payment will be debited mid-month. Please refer to the OCDSB website for the fee breakdown for each school.

Subsidy Information:

In order for your child to be registered in a subsidized space in the Extended Day Program, you must register with the City of Ottawa Child Care Registry and Waitlist (CCRAW) and your subsidy application must be approved. To access the childcare waitlist visit https://onehsn.com/Ottawa or please contact the City of Ottawa at 311 for more information.

In March 2022, the Federal and Ontario governments announced the signing of the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) agreement. Under the terms of this agreement, Ontario families with children under the age of 6 years would see significant reductions in the cost of childcare. In order to have our families access these reductions in fees, the Early Learning Department undertook the licensing process for all of our Extended Day Program locations.

All children under the age of 6 years are eligible for the reduction in fees as outlined in the Fees Based on Location chart.

At this time, children 6 years of age and older have not been included in the Federal Government’s CWELCC agreement, so there is a separate Fees based on Location document for this age group.
