Getting Ready for Kindergarten

Strong partnerships between schools, families and communities help young children learn and grow. Parents and caregivers can play a big role in getting their child ready for Kindergarten at the OCDSB. Here are some ways you can help prepare your child:

Playful Learning:

  • Active Play: Encourage daily physical activity, both indoors and outdoors. This helps develop gross motor skills like running and jumping, and fine motor skills like drawing and building.
  • Imaginative Play: Spend time in imaginative play. This can be as simple as pretending to be animals or as complex as creating elaborate stories.
  • Read-Aloud Time: Make reading a daily habit. Choose books that spark curiosity and imagination.

Building Strong Communication Skills:

  • Talk and Listen: Engage in frequent conversations with your child. Ask open-ended questions and listen attentively to their responses.
  • Expand Vocabulary: Use a variety of words and sentence structures to enrich their language skills.

Establishing Routines:

  • Daily Schedule: Create a consistent daily routine, including times for waking up, eating, playing and bedtime.
  • Self-Help Skills: Teach your child self-help skills like dressing, eating and using the toilet.
  • School Readiness: Practice school-like activities, such as following instructions, sitting still and raising their hand to speak. Practice the school routine, including getting dressed, packing their bag and saying goodbye.

Emotional Preparation:

  • Positive Feedback: Praise your child's efforts and achievements.
  • Decrease Separation Anxiety: If your child experiences separation anxiety, gradually increase the time they spend away from you.
  • School Visits: Visit the school beforehand to familiarize your child with the environment.
  • Practice Self-Regulation: Provide opportunities for your child to practice self-regulation skills, such as tidying up their toys or waiting patiently.

Safety and Health:

  • Personal Safety: Teach your child about personal safety, including stranger danger and bus safety.
  • Healthy Habits: Encourage healthy eating habits and adequate sleep.

Practical Tips:

  • Label Belongings: Label all your child’s belongings, including clothing, shoes and containers.
  • Review the Calendar: Review the school calendar with your child, marking important dates like the first day of school, field trips and birthdays.
