This page includes answers to common questions that families have shared about starting Kindergarten at the OCDSB. For more information, visit our Kindergarten webpage.
General Kindergarten Questions:
All of our Kindergarten classes incorporate 50% French language instruction and 50% English. This means that children will have a rich exposure to both of Canada's official languages. Almost all children in our Kindergarten classes are learning one or two (or more) new languages so our program is designed for supported language learning.
To help support your child’s language learning, celebrate any new learning you notice at home, whether it is a new word, a new phrase or a new song.
While each Kindergarten class may have a slightly different daily schedule, they all share some common parts. Every day, children participate in activities with the whole class, play on their own or with friends, and work in small groups with the teacher. They also have two breaks: one for snack and one for outdoor play (unless the weather is bad).
Use our OCDSB School Directory to contact your school directly, or send an email to enquiries@ocdsb.ca and we will be happy to assist you.
Full-day kindergarten classes have an average of 26 students. Classes of 16 or more students require an ECE in addition to a teacher. With two qualified professionals in the classroom there is an average of one adult for every 13 children.

The Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) provides school bus transportation across the OCDSB. School bus transportation is available to all Kindergarten students who live more than 0.8 km from their school. For more information, visit the OSTA website.
Extended Day Programs (EDP) provide your child with the opportunity to participate in activities that complement what happens during the regular school day.
The OCDSB operates the EDP for all children from Kindergarten to Grade 6 registered in their designated OCDSB school and where there is sufficient interest within the school community. EDPs are run either by the OCDSB, or by a third party provider in partnership with the OCDSB. Both types of programs are overseen by the OCDSB. Registration for EDP is a separate process from Kindergarten.
For more information, visit the EDP webpage.
Communication with parents about a child's learning is ongoing throughout the school year and includes three formal written reports as well as informal notes, conversations and discussions.
The formal reports include:
- an Initial Observation provided in the fall with an opportunity for a parent/caregiver/teacher conference, and
- a Communication of Learning provided at the end of Term 1 (late January/early February) and Term 2 (June).
The OCDSB offers a range of special education programs, designed to enhance educational success and nurture a sense of belonging for all our students. We are committed to working with you and your child to ensure that all the learning needs of each child are met through ongoing communication, cooperation, active participation and sharing of responsibility. Our Learning Support Services team is always available to schools to support our early learners. Learning Support Teachers, psychologists, social workers, speech and language pathologists as well as educational assistants dedicated to our Kindergarten classes, are some of the specialists available for schools.
If you think your child may require additional learning support, please talk to your school’s principal when you register in order to secure the supports your child needs. By letting your school know as early as possible about any special requirements your child has, our staff will work with you to develop an individual education plan that can address your child’s specific learning needs.
