Enhance your layout and design skills, expand your knowledge of typography, and create specific artwork that is driven by client and consumer needs. The Merivale Communication and Design SHSM program offers students the opportunity to develop strong foundational skills in painting, drawing, photography and graphic design. Students explore traditional art mediums as well as develop skill sets in digital image editing, video, animation, vector art, printmaking, and layout and design. Students learn to create art products based on client and consumer needs while generating a rich and diverse portfolio. Merivale’s SHSM program enhances students' art education through additional workshops, field trips, design sector certifications, and seminars by design professionals. The Communication and Design program prepares students to enter post secondary programs in graphic design, photography, video production, animation, illustration, web design, mobile application design and other communication and design programs.
The design world has recently questioned how design can improve communities and solve societal problems. How can our students’ participation in art and design courses help them create thriving communities that celebrate human connection while using environmental and human resources responsibly? Students will develop their artistic skills and vision while designing and implementing projects that give back to the community, help students develop their voice, and see themselves as creative builders of the community.
Experience Cougarvision - Colonel By’s award winning digital television station - the first of its kind in Canada. Use the latest industry standard hardware and software to produce a daily newsmagazine show that is broadcast to the entire school and streamed online each day. You will engage in critical decision-making through all aspects of your learning from the editorial meetings to the editing room to the daily broadcast.
Students are offered an enhanced experience in Music, Dance, Drama, Literary and Visual Arts by engaging in unique and exciting experiences with our community partners.
Through Music, Visual Art, Drama and Multimedia technology, students will express their opinions, perspectives and cultural traditions. Students will be encouraged and supported in the application of an artistic lens across their curricular endeavours. In addition to classes within our award-winning arts programs, students will have access to a multi-media lab with green screen and Hillcrest’s brand new recording studio. Students can choose to achieve a depth of knowledge by specializing in one artistic medium, or explore a breadth of possibility by taking courses across the arts disciplines.
Live Television Production, Filmmaking, Theatre and Visual Arts is the focus of this program. Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School is uniquely situated and equipped to offer our students real world training and experience in creative audio visual communication and entertainment using professional level video and photographic equipment and software, as well as access to visual art supplies and equipment. Students take part in workshops, certifications, and experiential learning specific to areas in Filmmaking, Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Theatre Production.
