LBS - Workplace Training/Skills Upgrading

About the Literacy & Basic Skills Program

Skills Upgrading program

The Skills Upgrading program is for adult learners who have one of the following goals:  

  • attending adult high school or college
  • finding employment
  • becoming more independent

Must have completed CLB 3 in English (Listening and Speaking) but may have lower English reading and writing, numeracy and/or digital skills.

Workplace Preparation Program

The Workplace Preparation Program offers several training programs in the field of working with children, health care and certificates for those working in the service industry. Please take a look at our course offering section for more details. 

Clients in the programs should be 18 years or older, and have completed CLB 5 in English (listening, speaking, reading and writing).

You must make an appointment to register for any of these courses. (No drop-ins please).

Please note that the courses offered are subject to enrollment.

Skills Upgrading (In-person and Online)

Study English reading & writing. Learn complex grammar, punctuation, spelling and effective vocabulary. Combine well-developed paragraphs to write properly. Write for a variety of purposes. Build your computer skills. Develop study skills necessary for high school.

  • Two sessions each year: September to January / January to June
  • Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Location: Continuing Education Centre, 440 Albert St.
Certificates for Employment (In-person and Online)

Three courses available - take one or take them all. Learn about workers rights, health and safety, employment culture and opportunities in Ottawa while you work towards certification in the following programs:

  • Standard First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate ( some minimal fees apply)
  • Soft Skills Solutions Certificate (free)
  • Safe Food Handler Certificate (some minimal fees apply)

Employment Preparation for Childcare Assistants (Face-to-Face Classes)

Prepare to find childcare Assistant jobs in childcare centres or to run your own home daycare. Learn about child development, behaviour guidance and safety issues. Learn to plan and lead songs and activities. Participate in a job placement (100 hours). Complete First Aid and CPR certification. 

  • Two sessions each year: September to January / January to June
  • Monday - Friday: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Location: Continuing Education Centre, 440 Albert St.
Employment Preparation for Health Care Aide (Face-to-Face Classes)

Prepare to work with older adults in a Retirement Home setting. Complete certificates in Standard First Aid and Safe Food Handling. Study health care, anatomy, common diseases, and caring for older adults. Learn communication and problem-solving strategies for working in the healthcare sector. Participate in a job placement (100 hours) in a Retirement Home.

  • Two sessions each year: September to January / January to June
  • Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Location: Continuing Education Centre, 440 Albert St.
Employment Preparation for Emergency/Casual Education Assistant (Face-to-Face Classes)

Prepare to work one-on-one and in small groups with school age children and youth with disabilities in a classroom setting. Learn about child and youth development, different learning/behavioral strategies for working one-on-one with a student in a classroom setting. Complete certificate in Standard First Aid/CPR/AED and Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) Training. Participate in a job placement (200 hours).

  • One session each year: September to June
  • Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Location: Continuing Education Centre, 440 Albert St.
Learning Support Centre

Learning Support is for adult learners who are interested in high school credit programs but are not able to attend a full-time program. Have a learning plan developed to help improve in one or more of the following: math, reading, writing, studying and computer skills.

  • Online or in person sessions: Call to book an appointment for in person or online sessions
  • Locations:
    • Adult High School, 300 Rochester St.
    • Continuing Education Centre, 440 Albert St.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have strong Speaking and Listening skills (approximately CLB 5 or higher)
  • Should have less than a grade 12 level of education (Canadian equivalent).
  • Priority will be given to clients who are unemployed, underemployed and/or receiving social assistance.

Funding from provincial and federal sources allow us to provide on-site child care so that families can attend Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) classes. Child care is available for children aged six months to six years. The program prepares children for Junior and Senior Kindergarten and provides all the early learning activities in a quality early childhood education setting (i.e., enhancing the physical, cognitive, linguistic, social and emotional development of the child.).

Clients are encouraged to arrange childcare in advance of program registration. See below for more information.

Child Care Fee Subsidy Contact Information

  • Families may contact 3-1-1 to obtain information surrounding child care fee subsidy or to be connected with their assigned worker.
  • Eligible ongoing families can contact their assigned childcare case worker directly by sending them an email to subsidycoordinators@ottawa.ca.
  • New families in the process of applying who have questions about their application and required documents can email ccraw-relage@ottawa.ca.
