Ridgemont High School celebrated Black History Month this past February, as the Black Student Union (BSU) and Sankofa Centre of Excellence students orchestrated a moving assembly. The event, a testament to the students' dedication and creativity, showcased the strength of Black heritage through a program that captivated the entire school community.

The assembly's theme, "Unity and Diversity: Celebrating Black Culture," emphasized how Black culture brings people together through shared experiences and artistic expression. The program was designed to educate and foster a deeper understanding of Black history and contemporary culture.

Artistic performances were a highlight, with students delivering a rendition of Cynthia Erivo's "Stand Up," a anthem of resilience and empowerment and being treated to the R&B stylings of Ottawa singer-songwriter NTHN. Students also performed a rendition of Carl Sandburg's poem "The People, Yes."

The assembly also featured a panel discussion of Ridgemont High School alumni: Saeed Babalola, Soumeya Osman, and Sundus Ali. These graduates shared their personal experiences and offered advice to current students.

Interactive elements such as trivia engaged the audience and fostered a sense of collective learning. The assembly was not only a celebration but also an educational opportunity, prompting students and staff to reflect on the importance of inclusivity and representation.

The Sankofa BSU students were supported by the Spartan Studios Tech Crew who dedicated countless hours to the preparation and production of the event. Their technical expertise ensured a seamless experience for everyone in attendance.

The Sankofa BSU students' vision was clear: to create an assembly that highlighted the importance of embracing and celebrating the unique voices that make up school communities. Their efforts were a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on attendees and contributing to a more inclusive and understanding school environment.
