A Symphony of Impact: Nepean High School’s Jeannie Hunter Wins 2025 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year

In a crescendo of celebration, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) witnessed a truly historic and remarkable moment: Jeannie Hunter, Head of Special Education and Fine Arts at Nepean High School, claimed the coveted 2025 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award. On a night illuminated by the Juno Awards' national spotlight, Jeannie's three-decade-long dedication to music education resonated across Canada.
More than just a teacher, Jeannie is a maestro of inspiration. "I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported me along the way — my family, friends, students, administration and colleagues, as well as the Canadian musicians that continue to inspire both myself and my students," said Jeannie.
"I accept this on behalf of all music teachers - what you do makes a difference every day. You build virtuoso human beings, providing students with a safe space to be themselves, to come together across backgrounds and circumstances, to grow, and to express who they are. In a world that seems filled with divisiveness and chaos, the act of coming together to make music may be the most powerful thing we can do. Now, more than ever, we need music. Thank you to MusiCounts for their incredible support of music education in Canada," she added. Her words, broadcast to a nation, captured the essence of her philosophy: music as a unifying force.
MusiCounts, the driving force behind this prestigious award, recognizes educators who transform lives through melody and rhythm. And Jeannie Hunter's story is a symphony of such transformations. For 30 years, she has orchestrated a vibrant musical landscape within the OCDSB, conducting everything from instrumental ensembles to inclusive programs that ensure every student finds their voice. Her dedication extends beyond the traditional classroom, nurturing a love of music in students of all backgrounds and abilities.
The OCDSB joins the nation in celebrating Jeannie Hunter, a teacher whose passion has created a lasting harmony within her school and community. Her MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award is a well-deserved standing ovation.
